Smudging is the ancient tradition and ritual of purifying the air with the use of the elements of fire (as you light your smudge), air (the smoke), earth (the herbs) & water (shell). Different herbs are used to purify, cleanse, clear and invite positive energy into a space. Some of the most common herb, wood & resin used are sage, palo santo & frankincense, but several others can be used as well. Together these herbs and resins can heal, purge, protect and bless when the smudging ritual is performed with intention. You can cleanse people, places and objects. And while the beautiful ritual of smudging sage and palo santo has been a part of the spirituality of indigenous North & South Americans for thousands of years, it is available to anyone who is willing to open themselves to the healing power of sacred smudging. Frankincense is also found in many spiritual ceremonies and rituals throughout the Middle East & Africa dating back to more than 5,000 years ago during the time of the ancient pharaohs.
